Walking: For fun and fitness?

For japanese people, walking is a way of life.

Japan may be touted as a country with a quite comprehensive transport system, yet walking still takes up 2/3 of a japanese's means of getting from Point A to Point B.

Consider this:-
  1. Japanese residences are built on the curbs of roads so bus stops are never located right outside someone's door
  2. The immediate buildings outside train stations are shops and business establishments
  3. Most japanese people live an hour away from train stations
  4. Many huge structures are seemingly built with no boundaries in mind
  5. Major train station encumbers a large shopping mall or huge exhibition spaces, which in turn will have a maze of underground shopping streets
  6. Traffic jams are 24/7 so walking is almost always faster than driving short distance
  7. Parking lots are expensive and located a distance from anywhere
  8. No one can really arrive at their destination on only one train ride, and changing trains could mean walking between tracks located several hundred metres from one another in the same station or even from one station to another located independant of each other
  9. With streets lined with buildings and shops windows, it really isn't difficult to find yourself walking for several blocks before realization hits you
  10. Land of shopping malls and shops; need I say more?
